Patriotism 2011

From the Old Farmer's Almanac:
"Three American presidents have died on the fourth of July. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, in 1826. They had been rivals in everything, even about who would live longest. Adams’ last words were about his long-time foe: “Thomas Jefferson lives!” In fact, Jefferson had died just five hours earlier, but Adams hadn’t gotten the message. James Monroe is the third president to die on July 4th, but he died in 1831."
So to my fellow countrymen: have a safe happy 4th of July. And to my Brit followers; how would you feel about allowing a few of us back in?

And a Happy Fourth of July to you, Robert! I always enjoy your humor, even when it stings. Can I tag along with you when you move to Canada? :-)

It won't be a free country much longer if certain factions have their way.

Then again . . . "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose." -- Janis Joplin (Actually written by Kris Kristofferson and ?)

Happy 4th!!!

These days the Brits are having problems of their own with job-killing right-wing policies trashing the economy, but at least secularism seems pretty firmly entrenched over there.

Actually the modern fundie version of Patrick Henry seems to be "Give me bigotry or give me death!" They just know that "God hates fags and atheists" is in the Constitution somewhere.

DJan Seriously, after Bush had been elected a second term, my buddy wrote a letter to the Canadian government asking about emmigrating. He was told that he could not emigrate based on retirement income, he had to have employment income.

Kay I know you personally work very hard to maintain our national ideals and paractice. But I also feel that the decline of our country is inevitable - they are determined to kill the Goose that lays the Golden Egg.

Infidel Of course I am being facetious, there are trade-offs in any form of modern government. Still, it surprises me how low the common denominator has gotten in our political discourse.

I always thought freedom was about having divergent points of view...Canada is too damn cold ...Maybe the South will secede again-??

Robert the Skeptic said...

Paul It is cold up there, I heard that 90% of Canadians live within 50 miles of the US border.

As for the South seceding again from the Union.. one can only hope!

Happy fourth.

Today I'm grateful for the geographic lottery of life and the cartoon.;)

I hear Ecuador and Panama are both wonderful for ex-pats/retirees. Taxes and the cost of living are both reportedly low and everyone has access to quality health care. Of course there are also third world conditions in places ... but we have that here too. Great deals on real estate.

Thanks for the chuckle, Robert. I needed that. But like DJan said, the truth in your humor still stings.

Don't believe the United Kingdom is doing a great deal better than the United States right now.

Hope you had a great day with the family!

Anyone for sunny Saudi Arabia ?? :-)

Cryptos I am as well. Of any place on the earth I'd want to live is here, and specifically in the PNW and specifically in Oregon. The climate is superb , no sales tax, no cockroaches, low humidity, mountains 1 hour to the east, ocean one hour to the west, physician assisted suicide - Now if we were only to allow us to pump our own gas!

Dissenter I see those articles in the AARP magazine, how you can live in Mexico or Central/South America on your social security alone. But my high school Spanish is not so good... which makes even ordering from the drive-up at a McDonalds in Southern California not so easy either.

Billy & Orhan True. I just got the bill for my heart surgery, $218,000 (just hospital, doctors were extra). Of course the Brits pay more in taxes than I do; but I pay taxes to plus $1,200 in medical insurance, my biggest monthly expense.

Paul Hey, Saudi Arabia - Nice beaches, free medical, free university education, no taxes. As long as I don't say anything that might get my head cut off, sounds idyllic.

We spent July 4th at the home of an English family -- in Massachusetts, where else? We all managed to get along. There's hope for us yet.

P.S. Loved your Repo story!

Paul Then I wish he'd tell me where my dark glasses are, I can't fine 'em anywhere!

Sightings I hope you served your English guests tea and kept the coffee for yourself.

Well, I am late to the party, as usual, but I lived through the Fourth fine. However, I am not a president, except at my house, where I am more like a dictator, they say. ;)

Dawn My father used to remind me of that all the time when I was a teen. "A family is not a democracy", he would say.

This reminds me, I never did finish that Adams mini-series on HBO...

Not surer Britain has quite figured it out, either.

Robert the Skeptic said...

Mandy I have heard that was very good. But my Netflix queue is soooo long at the present.

SecretAgent Quite so, although the seem to be able to deliver medical care to their population a less of their GDP. No 1st Amendment though. Trade-offs for sure.
