The American People Have Spoken

As House Speaker John Boehner likes to remind us, The American People Have Spoken:

You know the funny thing is that any message can be managed by skillful spinners to the point the public can be made to say they are for anything.

What is with these people that they are so stupid? Sorry, I don't usually say stuff like that but I've become rather impatient with people not thinking things through and simply doing what they're told like they never grew up.

BeachBum Indeed. Who is responsible for the huge transfer of wealth in this country, the recession and joblessness? Well, the lazy Poor, of course. Just ask anybody!

Rubye Because it is TRUE, Rubye... people ARE stupid. More importantly, the powers-that-be KNOW this and use it to their advantage; quite skillfully, in fact.

You always seem to know how to sum it all up in just a couple of words. The cartoon says it all...

And Boehner, the shame of Ohio, and his fellows don't/didn't listen to anyone with an income of less than seven figures or membership in an elite golf club.

Not surprising from the state that gave us Warren G. Harding.

I'm embarrassed to live here at times with idiots like Boehner but then I recall that things are tough all over.

It's sickening - but does it even matter what people are saying they want as long as those in power (ie., with money) are calling the shots?

Okay, I understand that there are many relatively unintelligent and uninformed folks out there who seem to eat this stuff up when it is covered with terms like "personal freedom" and "capitalism is the basis of our democracy". But believe me, I also know quite a few well-educated (college grads or higher) who also buy into this crap. Their bait is the promise that they will be able to keep more of their "hard-earned money" and control how it is spent. The marketing by those in power has been able to market to two very diverse target populations. The progressives seem to be at a loss in how to respond effectively, or to market their own message. Politics is now a business of marketing a product-and the right has cornered that market.

DJan This was someone's else's cleaver work, of course.

Kay I don't think Ohip has the corner on on lame brains. When one looks at the political demographic of the nation, we are pretty divided in the middle by two Liberal coastlines.. barely.

SecretAgent Well you probably know me well enough now to know I think the cause is pretty much lost. The people in power calling the shots KNOW they are, and they are going to be keenly focused on not letting that power slip from their grasp any time soon.

Cholst My read is that we have an underlying philosophical divergence from the other developed nations, and I am referring to Europe primarily - they think in terms of the common good; what is good for you is good for me. But in America we have this mind set focused on "self"; every thing is viewed in terms of 'what's in it for ME?" If we are all a bunch of individuals struggling, and more importantly, competing for dwindling resources, someone is going to have to end up with less so that I can have more. If any form of cooperation is viewed as Socialism, it's not going to happen.

Amazing and just too true!

No we don't but Boehner is one of the worst of recent times. What galls me is how someone with a Jesuit education (both high school and college) can commit the inanities he does. The Jebs have always been big on reason. Today's GOP could care less about reason and, while wrapping themselves in religion, have forgotten that greed is one of the 7 Deadly Sins.

Rain He hit the nail on the head, didn't he.

Kay I think many of them are not truly religious but proclaim so just to garner voters.

Kitten OMG an award! Thank you!
